Overview
Maxitrol® Eye Drops is a sterile ophthalmic suspension formulated by Novartis, combining potent anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents. Though originally developed for human use, it is frequently prescribed off-label by veterinarians for dogs and cats suffering from ocular infections and inflammation. This combination therapy is particularly effective in managing conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and post-operative eye conditions in companion animals.

- Neomycin sulfate – 3,500 IU
- Polymyxin B sulfate – 6,000 IU

- Benzalkonium chloride (preservative), sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid/sodium hydroxide (pH adjustment), and purified water

Uses / Indications
Maxitrol® is indicated for:
- Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
- Management of blepharitis and keratitis
- Control of ocular inflammation associated with infection
- Post-surgical anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial prophylaxis
Note: Veterinary use is off-label and must be supervised by a licensed veterinarian.
Dosage
- Typical dosage: 1–2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 6–8 hours
- Duration: 5–7 days, or as directed by a veterinarian
- Shake well before use
- Avoid contact between dropper tip and eye surface
Possible Side Effects
- Temporary stinging or burning upon application
- Allergic reactions (e.g. swelling, itching, redness)
- Prolonged use may lead to increased intraocular pressure or delayed wound healing
- Rare cases of corneal ulceration with inappropriate use
Precautions
- For external ophthalmic use only
- Do not use in animals with viral or fungal eye infections
- Contraindicated in animals with corneal ulcers
- Use with caution in pregnant or lactating animals
- Store at room temperature (below 25°C)
- Discard 28 days after opening
- Veterinary prescription required in Hong Kong under Schedule 3 Poison regulations
