Famciclovir Tablets
FamciclovirĀ is a human antiviral agent used in the treatment of Feline Herpes (FHV-1) infections. Feline Herpes infections are controlled, not cured, and recurrence may occur even if the cat is treated life-long.
Consider also giving anĀ L-Lysine SupplementĀ as an aid in treating Feline Herpes Viral Infection. L-Lysine competes with L-arginine, the amino acid required by the herpes virus to replicate. L-Lysine has been shown to reduce the severity and duration of feline herpes virus infections and to reduce the incidence of flare-ups.
Dosage and Administration (extra-label):
- Cats: 90 mg/kg orally every 8 hours for 21 days
- Film-coated tablets may be split for correct dosing
- Try giving without food, but if cat vomits or acts sick after receiving famciclovir, give with a small amount of food.
- Treatment duration recommendations can vary somewhat with 2-4 week duration often suggested. Kittens at least 5 days old may only require treatment for 2 weeks.
Adverse reactions:
Anorexia and increased drinking may occur in some cats. Dosage should be adjusted in cats with renal dysfunction. In humans, famciclovir can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headache.
